For the past 20 years, Dimitrios Kontoyiannis, M.D., Sc.D., has energetically led a multidisciplinary laboratory group that has made significant contributions towards establishing the conceptual framework for studying antifungal resistance and tolerance and their relationship of fungas fitness, discovery of novel antifungal compounds, and immune-pharmacologic approaches to control various opportunistic fungi. His team has developed novel experimental Drosophila and zebra fish models to study antifungal therapy and fungas pathogenesis, and used traditional mouse models to study in vivo pharmacodynamics of antifungals and novel diagnostics.
